Assistant Camp Director
Reports to: Camp Director
Compensation: Part-time contractor
Position Summary:
The Assistant Camp Director supports the Camp Director in the overall operation and management of the camp. This includes assisting with camp supplies, recruitment, staff training, and the planning and execution of camp activities. The Assistant Camp Director plays a key role in ensuring camp expectations are met, maintaining a positive camp environment, and overseeing staff and camper experiences.
Key Responsibilities:
Support the Camp Director: Assist the Camp Director with daily operations and tasks, providing administrative and logistical support as needed.
Manage Camp Supplies: Oversee the purchasing, tracking, and inventory management of camp supplies and equipment, ensuring proper organization and availability.
Recruitment & Staff Management:
Work with the leadership team to review camper applications.
Lead recruitment efforts for camp staff, conducting interviews, and making hiring decisions.
Approve and participate in staff training plans to ensure staff readiness and safety.
Set clear expectations for camp staff, and actively monitor and ensure those expectations are met throughout the camp session.
Provide guidance and intervene when necessary to address staff performance or camper-related issues.
Camp Theme & Activity Planning:
Collaborate in the selection of the camp’s theme each season.
Review and approve the camp activities plan to ensure it aligns with the camp’s objectives and provides a fun, educational, and safe experience for campers.
Budget Management: Work with the leadership team to purchase supplies and equipment for camp, ensuring purchases are within the designated budget.
Fundraising Participation (as needed): Participate in fundraising activities to support the camp's goals and financial sustainability.
Camp Preparation & Meetings:
Attend all camp prep meetings on a monthly basis, increasing attendance as camp approaches to ensure thorough preparation.
Actively participate in post-camp debrief sessions to evaluate the camp's success and identify areas for improvement.
Qualifications:
Prior experience in a camp leadership or staff role.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment and with a diverse group of people.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Experience in staff recruitment, training, and performance management.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make quick decisions in high-pressure situations.
Ability to work within a budget and make financially responsible decisions.
Passion for youth development and creating a positive, safe camp experience.
Additional Requirements:
Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed, especially during the camp season.
Must be able to attend all pre-camp and post-camp meetings and sessions.
